Christian Aid

Christian Aid is an important part of the Church’s mission in the Village and is actively supported by Christ Church as well as the Parish and Methodist Churches.   We work to fight poverty and injustice, inspired by the gospel message of hope and God’s concern for all people in every situation in their lives. We believe that we have a prophetic role-speaking to the structures that keep people poor as well as fund raising to alleviate emergencies and to help people become self sufficient.

A key emphasis for Christian Aid is working with partners on the ground-we have no staff working overseas, our money is channeled through local people and organisations that are best able to know how to react to crisis and give people long term assistance.

Christian Aid was founded by the churches of Britain and Ireland. And we work in around 50 countries, for example Afghanistan, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Colombia, Nigeria, Kenya and Brazil.

The local Christian Aid group is very active! We write letters to MPs, Campaign on issues such as “Climate Change” and fund raise. Our local committee organises activities such as a “Simple Meal” and co-ordinates the door to door collections and other activities around Christian Aid week”.

The Church is also a committed “Jubilee Congregation”. Part of “Jubilee Debt”, we campaign to “Drop the debt” for those poor countries who are burdened with enormous repayments, often exceeding any aid they receive and preventing monies being spent on health and education. Based on the biblical concept of Jubilee and verses such as Isaiah 58v6 to “Let the oppressed go free” we pray and act for political and economic action to cancel these debts.
